大學歷史背景
作為Adelaide大學的前任Bedford校區，Flinders大學是由伊麗莎白女皇于1966年3月25日正式宣布作為獨立的大學的。其實就在宣布的前18天，南澳議會通過了相關將Flinders做為獨立學院及州第二大綜合性大學的法案，并于同年的7月1日正式實行該法案。大學是以英國著名的航海家Matthew Flinders（1802年 探尋并考察南澳海岸）命名的。
成立后，該大學最有建設性的創舉之一就是以一所毗鄰大學、新成立的政府醫院作為大學的醫學院，并成立Flinders Medical Centre（FMC）。此舉在當時的澳洲乃首創。FMC與1976年正式啟用，直到1990 年，該大學才先后建起了另外3座學院大樓（法律與商貿、工程、信息科技），幷于1991年合并了南澳的高等教育學院，將4學院的結構由1992年起沿用至今。
學術實力
成立至今，Flinders目前可提供過百門學士與碩士課程，以及各個領域高層次的研究課題，涵蓋領域包括商學類、經濟類、計算器類、語言文化類、醫學類等等。除傳統學科外，近年來該大學還在一系列新的研究課程開設了研究生課程，如生物技術、法庭學等。
在2004年由墨爾本大學主辦的澳洲研究型院校評審中，該大學別列入全澳8所研究型大學范圍，國際期刊中最常引述的便是Flinders,而且該校的志愿還曾獲得澳洲大學校長委員會AVCC設立的教學優秀獎，同時屬于澳洲6所創新研究大學聯盟IRU-Australia的成員之一，培養出多名知名研究生，包括日本的第一位航天員、政界商界的領導人，澳洲電影獎獲獎導演等。

校園環境&設施
該校坐落在阿德萊德市洛夫提山腳下，環境十分優雅距離市中心僅10公里的路程。學校共有四座圖書館，提供寬敞的閱讀和學習場所。同時，還為所有學生提供微型膠片、視聽數據、微型計算機及各方面的光盤數據庫等資源設施。學生可免費通過專用終端接國際互用聯網使用借閱設施和收發電子郵件。校學生會為大家提供各種服務，學校還提供各種各樣的生活娛樂設施，設備齊全的健身房及許多一流的運動場地。此外，學校還提供其他的學生服務設施包括：保健、咨詢、金融、教育、福利、幼兒園、語言和學習技巧輔導、可提供各國食品的餐館、60多個學生協會、俱樂部和一個大學體育館。
